having read the excellent reviews I went to the National theatre last thursday to see this new play - got a standing ticket for £5 and quietly upgraded myself to the front of the circle. Howard Brenton has done a good job in covering the life of the fifties british PM Harold Macmillan and who better to take the lead than Jeremy irons , ably shadowed by a younger self (in Grenadier Guards battledress) throughout the play. Its an interesting story, not least the suppressed homosexuality of his younger days and his surprisingly complaisant attitude to his wifes long running affair with Lord Boothby. Good dialogue, good pace, agreeable costumes, excellent set , lighting and sound its not an earth shattering masterpiece ( except for the huge (well I won't tell you what you'll just have tro see the show won't you) at the end of act 1) - just a very competent and absorbing piece of theatre. I reccomend it. and the guy who plays that glorious old soak Winston Churchill is hilarious. |
