Went to see it last night after reading amazing reviews etc etc......It was just OK. Suppossed to be this hysterical comedy about racism in the 50s and then reversed in the 00s. I felt uncomfortable most of the play. The audience was made up almost exclusively of 50+ middle class couples who laughed everytime someone swore. The biggest laugh of the night went to the following joke "What to white women and tampons have in common...........they are both stuck up cunts". At £55 a ticket I really dont think it was worth it at all and I would not recommend it. Coming home on the tube there were lots of lovely posh people discussing how amazing it was and wondering if they should have laughed at the racism but decided it was post modern so it was OK. |

Wow, that's almost exactly how me and the b/f felt when we saw it! It didn't help that it was possibly the most annoyingly rude audience I've ever experienced (this was on press night...) and a woman who spent almost the entire time pointing out the plot to her daughter or evidently working out the dramatic irony of the 00's half versus the 50's half. But yes, the audience did just laugh at comments or jokes that were meant to be a lot more uncomfortable. The acting etc. was fine and it was an interesting idea, but I was surprised how unsubtle the whole thing was. It was a very American view on racism, which made it somewhat harder to relate. |
