My TV is about 7 years old and was one of the early CRT 32" widescreen beasts. Philips cool green it was brilliant when new, but it's struggling lately.

Now the remote's acting up and I'm wondering if I should buy a new remote (One-For-All, or similar) that would include enough of the features the current remote has (so no 'basic buttons only' type, or whether I'm best just persevering with getting up and changing channels the way we did in days of yore, saving the cost of the remote toward a new TV.

Dilemma. Advice?

See that's what I'm thinking. Why throw money at a broken machine.

it's like putting new tyres on an old banger.

This decision would be easier were it not for my thinking I'm just being a lazy bastard. TV works but the remote's funny.

"Get off your arse" could be equally sound advice.

well if the TV is OK, then buy a new all-in-one but from your initial post it sounded as though the TV set was struggling too.

Well it is.

See? I'm so on the fence.

It's taking a while to come on when started up and sometimes it has red lines that get redder until the screen turns off within about 5 seconds of it being turned on.

But on the rare occasion when it does do that - you can turn it back on fine and it doesn't occur twice.

Not twice in the same week, anyhow. It's not often enough to think it's going to burst into flames, but it's weird enough to be a sign that things are on the out.

Maybe I'll look at the January sales.

yes I think 7 years has had its useful life.

Shocking really that you can't expect 20 years out of a TV like in th'old days.

well yeah but the 20 year old set had probably had a number of repairs but repairs were cheaper than they are today and TV's were much harder on the pocket.

Most stuff today is throw-away stuff. Sad really! These companies don't make stuff to last cuz firstly they want you to be in the market again in around 5 - 10 years and then also buying trends show that even if an appliance is still working after 5 years, we're more than likely to ditch it and buy new for the newer technology so they don't make stuff to last as long as they used to cuz in some ways it's pointless.
