I have not had a DVD player for a long time, prefering to have all my films on a hard-drive media player. I guess with the proliferation of large-screen mobile phones and various types of media players, there is a demand for playing audiovisual media on these devices and not necessarily be constrained to using a DVD player, as has been the direction of audio and the CD.

So why do film companies decide to copyright their films? Yes, it will protect against piracy, but it is also an inconvenience to those who like to make their entertainment more portable.

I recently bought a DVD which was copyrighted. A part of this protecton is for the DVD to contain a number of versions of the film, but with the sequence of the film incorrect. To me, it seems as though this is to stop software automatically being able to rip a DVD and I suppose this alone will put off many consumers from trying to rip this type of DVD. But, in fact, determining the correct version of the film is qute a trivial matter and ripping the DVD from that pont, not too difficult. I am not going to sell copies of the ripped film, I am just going to put the film onto a different medium so I can watch the film when I want to and where I want to. So why do the film industry continue in their pathetic neanderthal way to try to stop people having entertainment in a form which can be used when and where they want to use it. Of course there will be some profiting from illegal selling of ripped films, but this will always be the case.

So please neanderthal film industry, look at and learn from what happened to DRM in the audio market and begin to move with the times.
