Advice from any techs ...

We have loads of movies, audio and pics on the PC's connected to our network at home and it would be really handy if we could simply view them on the lounge TV without having to place a laptop in there with a converter dongle to see the content as I have elsewhere in the house.

Netgear do one, PC World are selling it for £150 (EVA700) (though £105 elsewhere)

It looks OK but before parting with my cash I'd prefer to have someone tell me from experience what it can and cannot do or, indeed, recommend an alternative machine up to about £200

I don't much like the idea of consolidating all content to something like those Freecom hard drive set-ups.

Apologies if anyone has seen a similar thread ... I felt the title was not helping me get replies and just know Out! can provide a much better response than I got before so it had to be my fault!

AppleTV is very easy to use and costs £199.

The only problem is that it's a bit finicky about video formats - it basically wants MP4, so it might not be the best choice if you've got lots of WMV files etc.

Not used the Netgear thing, so can't comment on it.

Looked at the appletv thing and certainly it is very fussy re formats. It also seems to be just another external hard drive option which is really not what I am looking for.

Looks nice though ... I so wish I was brave enough to go Mac.

It's not just an external hard drive - it allows you to stream stuff from up to 5 computers.

And the computers can be either Macs or PCs.

Oh, right ... shows me up for not reading it all then!

Even so, still has the format issue which I am sure they'll get over in a later release because it kinda makes sense. But then, I said for ages that quicktime would one day be able to play all media formats and AFAIK, it still doesn't. (does it?)

Technically there's no reason why the AppleTV can't play any format you care to mention.

It's just Apple's control-freak tendencies getting in the way as usual.

They like MP4 so that's what they expect everyone else to use.
