Why oh why did I decide to upgrade my memory on my old desktop about 5 weeks ago? I buggered the motherboard and had to buy a new computer. Ever since I've had nothing but problems with hardware and software.

I installed the full version of AVG last week, and it seemed to slow performance just a little, but today my PC has become frustratingly slow: it takes a few seconds to move between tabs in firefox, and many web pages are failing to download, producing the 404 errors and 'problem loading page' messages.

I've now disabled all of AVG and it seems to be back to the way it was. It was almost unusably slow earlier, but I know I need protection: Do any of you lovely people have any suggestions?

BTW I had to uninstall AVG from the laptop because it kept crashing evry time I tried to run it. I used AVG on my old desktop without any problems.

I've recently acquired a lap top from the guy who maintains my main computer. This had the free version of AVG installe and it took ages to open up each time I re-booted. I've since swopped to Version 8, for which there is a charge. It's certainly much quicker. They're not daft at AVG.
