I have made some great mates online over the years, but the big drawback with making friends online is that they often live 100s of miles away...

I've been tasked with trying to locate a 22/23" digital TV/monitor for a friend, but I'm not having much luck.

She's wanting it primarily as a TV, to which she will connect a digital DVD/HDD recorder, but will also use it as a monitor with an iBook from early next year.

She's quite specific about a couple of things: it must be either 22" or 23" and it must have a digital tuner for future-proofing.

Having done a bit of research it would appear that Monitors with an added TV tuner are significantly cheaper than TVs of an equivalent size. I'm not sure why this should be, but monitors seem to offer much better value, as they're generally a higher resolution: typically 1680x1050 vs 1366x768.

So far I've only found a couple of devices which fit the bill, but neither gets particularly great reviews, especially when it comes to sound. They are:

Samsung 225MD - http://www.samsung.com/uk/products/monitors/lcd/lcdtvmonitors/ls22crdsfedc.asp

LG M228WD - http://uk.lge.com/products/model/detail/multifunctionmonitor_m228wd.jhtml#

Has anyone come across similar devices that they can recommend.

On a connected note there is LOTS of choice of monitors with analogue tuners, which I think is criminal given that the signals will be turned off within the next 5 years - Grrr!

I bought my TV monitor some years ago, so I haven't got any particular recommendations that would be any use now, but I agree using a monitor as your TV is a good way to go.

I just plug my Freeview box straight into the monitor input, and what I like is that monitor and tuner are separate, so when I listen to radio, I just switch the monitor off.

Hey Rob,

I've spotted quite a few HD TVs with PC inputs. I know there was an LG one in PC world for about £250.

I know acer do a monitor with TV tuner but it's from their Ferrari range and thus RED! haha

I'll let you know if I come across anything.

Well, we settled on the Samsung 225MD in the end and were both very happy with it.

The picture is very good and the digital tuner seems to pick up even a relatively weak signal. The sound, although not as good as a larger TV, is certainly very good for its size and much better than many built-in speakers on monitors of a similar size.
