Wow, I must say I was quite shocked to see yesterday that a guy has been imprisoned after posting offensive and abusive messages on Facebook and other social networking forums. Have I missed a discussion of this case on OUT already?

"Cyber bully Sean Duffy, of Grovelands Road, is one of the first people in the country to be convicted of ‘trolling' – the act of posting inflammatory content on the internet." -- http://www.getreading.co.uk/news/s/2099608_reading_troll_jailed_for_cyber_bullying

Anyway, I think it's fantastic that the sites, the Police and now the Courts are taking internet trolling seriously at last: online harassment, bullying, persistent negativity and abuse take their toll on people. As the internet develops as a social medium where people think they can hide behind online personas, post whatever they like and get away with it, it's good to see such a high profile case of times changing.

That said, my personal view is these people need to have their actions brought before them with serious consequence, but prison isn't the way forward - they need professional help, some kind of enforced respectful counselling perhaps, rather than being locked away: he's not going to come out of prison a reformed character. I hope he and others get the help they need to change their behaviour, and that it helps other people to consider their actions before they post stuff online.

I also agree to some extent with the view I found Googling opinion on the story -- http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/tobyyoung/100104832/loathsome-though-they-are-internet-trolls-should-not-be-sent-to-prison/

An interesting one!
