I've received some info concerning vaccinations for Hep B among high risk groups.. including gay men.

It used to be the case that you could be given a series of vaccinations that in most cases would give long-term immunity from the Hep B virus over a number of months.

Unfortunately, since these were given over a 3/4 injection course that took in some cases over a year before immunity/non-immunity could be determined, there was a huge gap in numbers from men starting the course and men completing the course to gain Hep B immunity.

Because of this, healthcare services in the UK have been granted a license to prescribe a programme of anti Hep B vaccinations that take place at 0, 7 and 21 days. So if you go to your local GUM clinic you could have all 3 vaccinations within the month. I don't know if all GUM clinics are doing this, but it's definitely worth asking.

Note that because of the new rapid schedule, even if your body has responded to the injections, you will be given a booster vaccination 12 months after your first dose. Also, while everyone eligible should get vaccinated, Hep B immunity is not automatic after treatment and there are a minority of people who do not develop sufficient antibodies to be immune, even after 'booster' injections.

If you haven't completed this programme of treatment and you are, or are considering being sexually active, please speak to your local GUM or health serivce and make an appointment.

It's free, you don't need to give any personal details to have an appointment or get treated, and it can save lives.

Get vaccinated against Hep B. It is highly infectious and can be in pre-cum as well as cum - and spit. Make sure you know your stuff: check out http://www.hepinfo.org/
