I don't know about you but I am a sucker for films based (or loosely based as a few of you might say) on the Tudor period, especially ones that revolve around King Henry VIII and his six wives.

So tonight I was lucky enough to go to the Royal premiere of The Other Boleyn Girl and even though I didn't go in with any ideas as to what it might be like...it was actually quite bearable. Intense...which those of you who have read the Philippa Gregory novel would understand...but otherwise good on the whole. For a brief synopsis of the movie...check out quickfind:331543

I'm not sure whether someone else could have carried off the role Mary Boleyn better than Scarlett Johansson...but I thought it could have been better played. Since the focus of the story is exactly as the title of the movie suggests...I think more could have been done with her. I couldn't help but feel that Natalie Portman stole the show in the end.

Eric Bana was a convincing King..but not like the famous large-built portraits of him, and definitely not like the Jonathan Rhys-Meyers incarnation either. Instead he brought his own authority to the role, yet he also managed to show a vunerable and bewitched side toward Anne Boleyn.

No matter how many different times I see the execution of Anne...I still manage to turn away from watching the sword meet her neck. But that...and having Mary in the crowd watching as Anne is beheaded..I think is probably the best scene. Mary doesn't utter a word, but you can see all the feelings in her face...for the sister she couldn't protect in the end..

Would I recommend this? Yes..but be prepared for the slow start...and very speedy second half. For those who are a fan of stories with Kings and Queens of a bygone era..then you might just like it. Just don't go in to the auditorium wanting it to be historically correct, but instead go in with a view to see what things might have been like from the point of view of the Boleyn sisters.

I for one am looking forward to seeing Scarlett take on the role of Mary, Queen of Scots...which in currently in pre-production.
