Well, just got home from seeing it, and I'm quite disappointed.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable hour and a half, a rollercoaster ride of thrills and spills. But it was also ultimately unfullfilling. I came away thinking that there was a much better movie waiting to be made here. The concept is amazing, but it all seemed a bit silly and inconsequential. I never felt any warmth for the main characters, except for Hud, the cameraman. The plot was so cliche-ridden it made Godzilla look like Citizen Kane. And it all seemed a bit flimsy and badly thought out.

There are some excellent scenes. The first half is pretty well done. The hysteria of the characters not knowing what on earth is going on is nice, and a very different angle from other monster movies. And the 9/11 references are well done. Then it all goes a bit 'tits-up'. The monster gets a bit tiresome, popping up every five minutes. The little 'lice' things that drop off it are a monster movie cliche, and only seem to be there for the sake of one admittedly terrifying scene in the tunnel (albeit lifted directly from Pitch Black). The rescue of Beth is just ridiculous. And Hud's death scene is just laughable. In fact I wish we had never seen the monster. The more often it appears, the sillier it gets.

It looks as if it's the start of a series of films. And it reminds me of watching the first episode of Lost. Pretty enjoyable, but obviously not worth continuing with.

Shame really. The trailers were gobsmackingly brilliant. I've been waiting to see this for so long. I hope Star Trek is better.
