why are scene gay men purely concerned with external image over internal identity? why have they slavishly devoted themselves to adopting a gay media image of pseudo muscle and designer label to define themselves as people rather than defining themselves through inner identity unreliant on outer commercial affirmation?

as gay men we have challenged and provoked mainstream straight society's concept of 'normality'for centuries. Our sexuality is perceived as a threat to procreative heteroesexual marriage. This rejection by normal society has made us question the very nature of sexuality since we can only be who we are and in doing so offer a genuine alternative to opposite sexual attraction and traditional sex role playing. we have had to find out who we are with no assistance from society's determining who we should be and how we should behave.

so, why are we now obsessively imitating a reactionary and conformist image of what constitutes masculinity? why are london men adopting a stereotypical exaggerated image of masculinity to define themselves as who they are? going to the gym and pumping iron to look like models in gay magazines and films is to limit and diminish our potential as spiritually growing human beings. these men seem terrified of not being perceived as attractive according to the gay commercial media. To be musicular also appears to be equated with being successful and winning in a highly competitive uncaring 'ghettosised' marginalised gay society. i don't think being muscular and wearing the latest brand name underpants will intergrate us into mainstream society but merely cause us to be accused of aping straight men who think they are being stereotypically masculine to attract the opposite sex who think physical strength is power.

real strength comes from exploring your inner emotional self and discovering your strengths and weaknesses, and not being afraid of confronting your own vulnerability. looking like a muscular cartoon joke and being arrogantly confident are not desirable qualities to me. the gay commercial media must be laughing all the way to the bank with the money their making out of exploiting gay men's fear of not being perceived as attractive and fashionable.

why not find out who you really are first before becoming a false image that hides and suppresses who you might be as a caring sensitive individual who respects other people aswell as yourself?

That sounds like a sweeping generalisation

Why single out gay men?
