I used to live in a town called Wick. Wick is in the far north of Scotland, over 100 miles north of Inverness. The population of Wick is just over 8000, and for the whole county of Caithness is about 25,000.
Wick supermarkets: Somerfield (formerly Safeway), Scottish Co-Op and Lidl. The two big supermarkets are much larger than their typical shops in London, and have been there for years. Thurso, about 20 miles from Wick and slightly larger, has three same supermarkets.
Today, Tesco opened in Wick. Vouchers offering £10 off a £30 shop have been posted to many people across the county. For Caithness, the store is massive. Open from 6am to midnight six days a week, and 8am-8pm on Sundays (note the different trading laws!) the company was welcomed with open arms by people who had long felt that proper competition was absent locally. Asda, who want to open in Thurso have had a planning application turned down. The petition to the council to over turn the decision currently has about 2900 signatures. For many years a debate has raged about whether Tesco coming to Caithness would be a good thing, and this store opening, to my mind, sums up very nicely the current debate on supermarkets.

Tesco have called the Wick store their very first eco-store, and insisted that everything to do with the building of it was 'green'. According to BBC News, that meant transporting the building supplies and equipment by ship rather than by road, the store itself being built with a timber frame rather than a steel one and using a range of green technologies such as solar and wind power.

Friends of the Earth have reservations about Tesco being seen as green, but admit that transporting everything my ship could be better than the 75 trucks that Tesco say would otherwise be used.
So, does Tesco coming to town help a community in the longrun? Should Tesco be allowed to dominate to the extent they do? Are big supermarkets really cheaper in the longrun? With more big 'names' shops in a small town, will that stop people shopping in the nearest city? Isn't this just competition the way it was intended? Is Tesco genuinally attempting to be a green company or is this all a marketing ploy? Is offering £10 off a £30 bill unfair competition? Aren't Tesco simply a successful British company that is getting it right?// |
