Ex married man with 3 grown up sons. Came out to family early 2003 and went through what can only be described as "interesting times"! Within weeks had fallen madly in love with an old university friend based in Edinburgh. After 18 months he finally got a job in Cambridge and we set up home together in January 2005, becoming Civil Partners May 2008. Happy to chat to anyone in similar circumstances.

Our local abandonded Woolies after months lying empty has now been reincarnated as Poundland. In many respects it does seem to fill a similar niche.

I went on a reccy last week and like a moth to the flame have been back twice.

There do seem to be some genuinely amazing bargains amidst lots of tat - currently cubic meters of Christmas stuff.

How do they do it? I understand that they are raking in lots of profit.

And I can now see some of their strategy lies in impulse buying. And the use of specially formulated package sizing.

I bought a 200g jar of Nutella at the weekend - for £1 of course. Later that same afternoon as I cruised the aisles of Waitrose I saw the usual 400g size jar for £1.83.

I dont feel I was being duped at Poundland as often smaller unit sized things are more than 1/2 price - but maybe not quite such a bargain after all.

I also got 6 pack Walkers crisps for £1 - all healthy stuff obviously. Not to mention the Fray Bentos Pie (clearly marked £2.29 but sold for £1 and in date till Jan 2011).

And having managed to lose my prescription glasses (£100) earlier in the week I am jolly glad I bought 3 pairs of reading glasses (yes at £1 each!) at Poundland.

Even found knee length socks for the fancy dress party we're off to next weekend! (I'm going as a schoolboy).

The other local shops nearby are hoping to reap the benefit of extra punters walking past.
