Sane, sorted and switched-on guy, enjoying life in Brighton. I run my own small business, perform as a stand-up comic and enjoy my garden. I live with my partner (who I met on Out many moons ago) and our dog. I'm as likely to be tending the garden as pounding a dance floor, or to be in a suit as in my leathers. Aren't contradictions wonderful?

I'm growing leeks for the first time this year, and they're doing well (apart from a bit of rust) but some of them are now putting up flower buds - should I cut them off or let them flower? |

If a plant (leek) is shocked by the possibility of early death, in some situations it will send up a flower stalk to try to set seed and so reproduce before the parent plant dies. Given the dreadful weather we have had this year, its no surprise if some plants develop early senescence and try to set seed early. A proportion of my onions also set seed far too early this year. other things to consider include: conditions during germination and early growth, soil fertility, fluctuations in temperature and water availability. I wont go on. Btw are you gardening on one of Brighton's allotment sites? |

They won't become poisonous, just because they've flowered. Try one and see what it tastes like. |

suggest as with onions pull the flowers off and don't worry about it. |

Quickfind:notsohorrid was absolutely right about them becoming a bit woody, but otherwise they're very nice! |
