"A consultation is underway into plans for a new electricity link between Orkney and mainland Scotland.
The connection is needed to export power generated by tidal and wave renewable energy projects in Orkney Waters and the Pentland Firth, for which Crown Estate leases have been agreed.

Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission Ltd (SHETL), the company responsible for the electricity transmission network in the north of Scotland, has published a consultation document asking for views on the proposed new power link.
To allow electricity generated to reach the National Grid, the renewable energy projects will need to connect into a new substation in Orkney.

From there the energy would be transmitted at 132,000 volts via a buried cable to a landfall on the Orkney Mainland coast.
It would then pass subsea across the Pentland Firth to Caithness, from where the transmission line would be connected to Dounreay substation, again by buried cable.

A number of studies have already been carried out and, as a result, the consultation document sets out preferred options for the new Orkney substation site, cable connection route, Orkney landfall, subsea cable route, Caithness landfall, and connecting cable route to Dounreay substation.

It is this preferred option, and a number of alternative options, which are being consulted upon.
A public exhibition is being held in Orkney to provide members of the public with an opportunity to learn more about the project and to provide feedback on the proposals. It takes place at the Harray Community Hall on Thursday October 27 from 2-7pm."

I think it's interesting to see the Pentland Firth schemes starting to get real. I personally don't see renewables as providing enough power to replace Nuclear, but every little helps.

SHETL - interesting acronym. It looks so like "shtetl" ...

But at least it's better than the unfortunate SMEG, and any others I've missed.

Sorry ... AND NOW: back to our topic!
