A topic from Film, TV & Radio: Science Fiction

Just been re-watching "The Flight of the Navigator" -- a colleague gave me a free DVD of it off a tabloid...

In case you don't remember the storyline, boy doesn't know he's been taken by an unmanned alien spacecraft and taken 500 odd light years away and back in about 4hrs 40mins. Our world and all the people on it have aged about 8 years and he comes back the same age. Spacecraft crashes after dropping him off having stored all its starmaps in the unused 90% of his brain. It reloads its starmaps and he then time travels back to his own time 8 years before and lives happily ever after (one supposes).

OK, so now to the basic time travel question.

In his past, things have happened in the future e.g. his parents will believe him lost and meet him 8 years time un-aged. If he returns to what is effectively the present, then that future will not happen. They probably won't move home as they won't have the grief of losing a child. will he then meet his 12 year old self when he's 20 in 8 years time?
