A topic from Literature: Science Fiction and Fantasy

Ok, apart from the obvious Sam/Frodo affair (why is Sam lurking outside of Frodo's window eh in FotR?) does anyone else have any recommendations for when a gay character actually pops up in a mainstream scifi/fantasy story?

I read some god-awful 'gay scifi' which generally means a load of people stuck on a ship having sex, but I recently stumbled upon a fantasy series in which one of the main characters 'comes out' during the series. Unfortunately, the series itself was dissappointing (big overture, little-bitty climax) but thought it might be nice to see some nice well-rounded gay hero in a good mainstream book.

So, anyone found any?

Not really found any (not really been looking either), but the best I did find was several of Isaac Asimov's works where most people are bisexual and it's just treated as an everyday occurrence - there's no drawing attention to the point, the characters just are and it's presented as just part of life. Which I thought was rather good.

They have a gay charachters in Torchwood?

If I recall queen of angels (by greg bear) has a lead gay charachter, not made much of apart from a few "bunk" scenes at the start of it.

Oh, and don't forget Daniel Jackson was my love intrest in Stargate SG1 for years.

The principle character(s) in "The Last Herald Mage Trilogy" by Mercedes Lackey are gay - Vanyel and Tylendel.

Beautiful story.
