I've always been able to do it. When I was very young I would stuff things up my nose, usually wool and make this sound. I called it "snuffing".

I was reading that no one really knows for certain how a cat purrs and I was thinking about the sound I can make. Emotionally, the need to make the sound seems remarkably similar to a cat's need to purr. I would make the sound when I was happy and also when I needed comforting or reassurance. Furthermore, if you make allowances for the shape of the human palate, the sound is not dissimilar to a cat's purr.

Like cats, I can make my noise and vocalize at the same time. I can also breathe normally while making the noise. However, I can't speak and make the noise, just make sounds with my vocal cords.

The way I make the noise is by some kind of rapid tongue vibration against the uvula. I wonder if this is similar to how a cat purrs. And I wonder if I were to be studied making the noise, if it could help to understand the mechanism behind feline purring.
