I was just reading the BBCs Robert Peston on the pros and cons of Northern Rock's nationalisation...

and although it looks like bad news for shareholders and mortgage holders, he makes the point that it's very good news for savers.

NR is now the safest bank in the UK for savings. It cannot go bust, it's backed by the treasury. And it has some ridiculously high interest rates on it's savings accounts, to lure back all the savers who withdrew last year.

I'm dispairing a bit at the falls in interest rates, which will probably continue for the next 2 years, and worried about the instability and irresponsibilty in the banking business (is Bradford and Bingley next to collapse?), so Northern Rock looks like an excellent home for instant access savings at the moment.

But he fails to mention if they will still sponsor Newcastle United :-))
