Unitarian Universalist church in Southlake will sponsor gay rights vigil

Straight supporters of gay, lesbian and transgender rights will hold a candlelight vigil Wednesday at Southlake Town Square as part of a national event to break down prejudices.

The gathering will be led by a pastor new to the area.

"Not only is this a faith issue, but it's a human-rights issue," said the Rev. Tony Lorenzen, the new pastor of Pathways Unitarian Universalist Church in Southlake.

"The Bible really doesn't say too much about homosexuality," he said. "The Bible doesn't really have a sex ethic; it has a love ethic. Jesus doesn't say much about condemning others. Jesus encourages us to love our neighbors as ourselves."

The vigil is part of Seven Straight Nights for Equal Rights, a series of vigils across the country starting Sunday and ending Sept. 20.

Organizers seek to have straight people lead each vigil, said Seven Straight Nights spokeswoman Paige Schilt. About half will be led by religious leaders, she said.

"One of the things that Seven Straight Nights does nationally is put a face to people of faith speaking up for equality because they feel that's what their faith calls on them to do," she said.

Seven Straight Nights was started last year by gay and lesbian groups in Austin to push for rights such as marriage and freedom from violence and workplace discrimination, Schilt said.

Lorenzen said he chose Southlake Town Square for his event because it is near his church. He said he expects 50 to 100 people.

"We're hoping to start a process of educating people in the greater Southlake area and Northeast Tarrant County on the importance of being accepting of the gay and lesbian community here," he said.

Beau Heyan, co-chairman of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network's Dallas chapter, will also speak at the event. "Texas typically is considered very conservative," he said. "But in Dallas and in the Metroplex, we find this different story. We're usually a little more open."

... Well done them, it is nice to see that not all strr8 church goers are anti-gay. I hope their example of a candle light vigil is a beacon of hope.
