I wanted something fruity but not a piece of fruit.

Noticed my blender and thought smoothie...

Googled Banana, Plum Smoothie and got a site that has loads of smoothies browsed the recipies and then looked at what i had to put in it.

Ended up with

3 bananas
4 Plums
a large desert spoonful of smooth peanut butter
and a bottle of Apple & Raspberry J2O as I had no other fruit juice.

Whizzed it all up in the blender and got something that tasted much like other smoothies one buys in the shops but the recipies site seemes to have icream or crushed ice in every recipie.

So was mine a "real" smoothie?

And, how many 5 a days did that count as?

Banana's and plums?

Your kitchen sounds like a sitcom from the 70's.

Sounds like a smoothie to me!

Oooooo Errrrrr!

I never really thought about it that way!

You've made me really smile and laugh about it.

I can just imagine Fanny Craddock saying now put your banana and plums in the blender (ouch!)

For a "proper" smoothie, crushed ice is an important ingredient.

But then bollocks to all that! I make smoothies without crushed ice (and without ice cream), and still call them "smoothies". I usually use natural yoghurt and/or semi skimmed milk instead of ice/ice cream.

Ignore the rules and play around with the ingredients. Just have fun creating what you enjoy drinking.

I understand the current guidance to be that a portion of fruit or veg is what you can hold in one hand.

I would imagine that you would need two hands for the plums (if I can put it like that), so with the 3 bananas I reckon you've got 5 portions

Not quite so simple as that, unfortunately.

Smoothies and fruit juices are treated differently to whole fruit. My understanding is that no matter how large a glass of fruit juice you drink, or how many glasses, this generally counts as one portion. The same applies to smoothies, although there is currently a recommendation that they be counted as two portions, not one.

Not entirely sure why this is the case; I guess it is more about how your body processes food in liquid as opposed to solid form.
