...when you're faced with bigots!

But nevertheless I managed to keep my cool. This morning my boss asked me if I'd seen a BNP broadcast that had been on TV last night. I hadn't seen it, and I told her I wouldn't watch such a broadcast anyway as I simply wouldn't entertain any viewpoint the BNP held. She knows I'm gay and doesn't have a problem with it. However, she proceded to tell me that although she wasn't a racist she did agree with a lot of what the BNP said (huh?).

So I replied by saying that I thought that the public has little trust for mainstream parties now and that this was perhaps leading to misplaced support for extreme parties with dangerous views. I think it's up to the main parties to do something to buck this trend. I wasn't going to agree with her, but I wanted to remain calm and diplomatic, which I think I managed.

I don't know what the BNP's view on homosexuality is, but I imagine it's not good. Does anyone know?

I thought I handled the awkward conversation well, but I do wish people would think before they speak.

see whilst i agree with you, i do think its wrong NOT to know what these people are spouting as policy, if you dont know their policies how can you fight against them

If i were you i would check out their website and see what we all need to fight.

If I'd have know it was on, I would have watched it... its always better to know what you're up against than assume fthe worst and look an idiot when you start slating something only to find your understanding of their ideas is unfounded

I don;t think she was being bigotd, just seeing if you'd watched it. I would have asked anyone here the same if I had, whether they be black, white, straight, gay, male, female,British whatever.

It would be far better to see the broadcast and then you can discuss what she agreed with and what she didn't, she may actualyl have a point. The BNP are fully aweare that support for the major parties is beginning to flag so its a good time to start watering down some of their ideals to bring new supporters on board.

See it, then go talk to her about it. Don;t brandish it,or her, as extremist if you haven't even seen it
