We are a very close trio, that love entertaining and meeting others, we love fun, life and all it offers, you just have to understand our strange setup, but it works for us very well, and has done for quite a long time.

We recently moved address and contacted BT to close one phone line account in Lincolnshire and move the other phone account from London to Ipswich.

Both accounts were in my partners name and we technically owed money on both accounts which we were happy to pay. I contacted BT to get things moving and they took my details but instead of transferring the account from London, they created a new account for me in Ipswich so we now had 3 phone lines.

It took a bit of sorting and we eventually got what we wanted, which was a single line in Ipswich (although we went through 4 different numbers within a week!!)

However despite us knowing that we owe money on the 2 original accounts, BT decided that they infact owed my partner £36 and sent him a cheque. But in todays post, BT sent ME a cheque for £95-50 despite the fact ive never paid them a single penny and had a phone line for 4 days and we are effectively £131.50 better off.

Talking to BT gets us nowhere and they insist this is correct, what do we do, just accept it or persuade them they are wrong?

Well, I don't know the legal position, but if you've told them and have offered to return the money, then you've done what you can. I guess the problem could be that they have sent cheques, rather than crediting your account. If you cash the cheques knowing it's not yours it seems different from it just sitting there as a credit on your account.

True, its the moral issue here, but there again they did say they were correct
