Ok guys and gals... a but of a stab in the dark here, but all help gratefully received.

I have to program a module into a proprietary database system (using IIS/SQL/XML etc) to get a batch of account statements out of it (periodically) and it needs to be flexible as we have a number of clients with differing demands.

The data set up... I have a number of relational tables and need to pull differing amounts of data from different tables into a document to send to customers; each client will have a different set of data (although the data will be in a similar format - some clients could have 10 investment funds, others could have 20 or so). Usually, we'd program the system to output using a 'wordlink' (MS Word mail merge), however, the wordlink will only apply one filter per table, so is rendered useless for what I want to do. I also cannot add any new tables to the database to transform the data.

The current process (migrated badly from an old system) cycles through each customer and pulls out the data by doing data reads, which is unbelievably inefficient, so I need to replace it.

I can potentially do the statement in XML/XSL (in fact I have most of this already roughly programmed), however, I need to get this into something that can be printed and posted as well as applied to EDM on the database (so I can put a letter on the front and a notes page on the back etc). Obviously Word uses XML (to a degree) but passing data connection strings is an issue in the way that the system holds Word documents on the database, as well as from a security point of view.

So has anyone any tips/ideas on how I might be able to transform the data/get it out into a printable document? I think my situation here is reasonably unique as it's programming with both arms behind my back as there is only so much I can do with the software!!!

Help! It's keeping me up at night. lol
