photoHI, I am 56, a retired academic. I live in NE London and want to expand my social life. possibly find a LTR. I am told that my best qualities are my warmth and sense of humour. I suffer from ME/chronic fatigue syndrome and this limits my social activity. I have many interests and am generally regarded as good company. I am especially keen to meet people who live nearby for social meets.

This is a single option poll: "Labour Party Funding Scandal - how serious is it?"

  • Very serious - could bring the government down: 1 vote
  • Fairly serious - will damage government support: 10 votes
  • More of a cock up than a conspiracy - will do little damage in the long run: 15 votes
  • Something blown out of proportion by the media - will do no real damage to government: 2 votes

I'd suggest the Tories and LibDems should be rather careful about trying to paint Labour Party funding black while they assert they are whiter than white. Such claims generally have a very nasty habit of turning around and biting back.

Expect news of dodgy funding deals within other parties in due course.

The Tories are in no position to judge or say anything without history coming and biting them on the bum. They have always epitomised sleaze. Unfortunately when Labour started stealing Tory Clothes and dressing themselves up as Tories they somehow took on their less attractive aspects as well.

Up to a point. While for historical perspective, it is interesting to look at the 1990s, the reality is that the present difficulties in which Labour finds itself are a result of the 2000 Act.

quoting > "Unfortunately when Labour started stealing Tory Clothes and dressing themselves up as Tories they somehow took on their less attractive aspects as well."

An interesting article in today's Times ("If only Mother Teresa had been a Labour donor") in which extracts from Alistair Campbell's diaries are quoted:

'TB didn't like the sleaze issues,' Campbell noted, 'Said the reality was our politics was probably the least corrupt in the world and while the party advantage was there, the trouble was that it would end up tarring all politics.'

A day later TB returned to the theme: 'Hated the focus on sleaze. Once that becomes the currency of politics, the media would love it, and if you try hard enough, you can make Mother Teresa look sleazy if you establish there is something wrong in the motives of the people who want to help her.'

Sorry - link for the above:

It also makes the interesting point that Blair had a bad 6 months at the beginning of his premiership (Ecclestone £1million donation and tobacco law change / handling of decision not to join Euro).

Obvious difference this time round though is that in 1997 the country was desparate for a change of govt and was therefore more inclined to benevolence. The Tories' standing was at an all time low and there was up to 5 years before the next election.
