A topic from Mind, Spirit & Beliefs: Political

This a sort of spin-off from the "Favourite Hymns" discussion.

There was some divergent opinions on religious leaders influence and teachings. Not too negative but varied opinion.

Lets put this in historical perspective - they were ALL religious nutters of one variety of the other Luther, Calvin, Knox but they were just variations on the pope/ archibishops. Both so assured of their "correct view" and the damning of others.

However, do you think the UK, society, economy, individual benefited from the rise of protestantism?

I went on a roadtrip through Europe and stopped of at Wittemberg in Germany to visit Luther's sites and the church etc. There were two male Brazilian prostitutes with us who just could not get why we made a detour to this place.

Finally, I say in a coffee shop and made the connection between their right to whore themselves in London and fact that one day someone said "no" to authority and chose to think for himself and promote the idea of individual responsibility for your own salvation - even if you use your freedom to act to make bad choices. This linked into liberal democracy, individuality, gay rights, yadda yadda yadda.

So did the UK benefit from Henry's wives issues? Have we benefitted from Calvins, Wesleys etc?
Does it still matter today ion 21st Century?

I'm tempted to make some semi-humourous remark about Calvins but you just know I'd be talking about underwear anyhow!

It's good that people's religious beliefs are respected.

However, the split among Christians has caused plenty of problems in my opinion.

Actually, I really wish that everyone - worldwide - would realise that all religions are simply belief systems and that there is only one God and that people relate to God in different ways.

Oh, yes, and religions need to stop persecuting people who don't fit into the so-called 'normal' - ie majority - mode or those who don't subscribe to their exact belief system.

Dont you feel lucky that you in a country where you have benefitted from the knock on effect of liberalism born of the rise of individuality?

I am soooooo happy to not have to contend with what my friends in Italy, Greece or Turkey have to deal with. Certainly dont think you need to believe in any religion to have benefitted from the impact of liberalisation.

I mean the idea that money is good and you dont have to live in poverty and respect your betters because this is God's given order sort of makes my life easier. (Even although Luther was a sort of nutter with strange sexual needs and a thing about his pooh. ;-)
