Would this be the time for the Liberals to promise to reinstitute the 10% tax band? Because, realistically, no-one will believe the Tories if they promised to, and besides, their support is flat-lining (perhaps a result of the rise of minority parties over the last few years, or just because enough people hate them to never vote for them.

It just seems to me, that the Party with the most promise over the next few years may well be the Liberal Democrats - In the 80s, we saw the SDP score phenomenal poll ratings - could the Liberal Democrats pull a similar thing off today? Though I suppose, nowadays, part of the problem for voters of the left is the lack of an old-style socialist alternative. Maybe the Liberals couldn't offer the sort of policies required to pick up the votes that Labour appear to be shedding.

Just a ponder.

This is bad news for Labour! However YouGov tends to over estimate Tory Support and ICM (had just 5% lead this week for the Tories) over estimates Labours support.

I'd say Labour are down but not yet out! I'd imagine though lots of Labour Backbenchers are very nervous!

All this talk of putting the 10p tax band back - and now talk of the Lib Dems who want to increase the basic rate to 23p or more... surely doing *that* will make the many millions of people who are now better off somewhat more annoyed than the millions who are now worse off?

There's lots of talk about people being worse off with the reduction in basic tax to 20p (paid for by trashing the 10p band), but there are *lots* of people better off by the whole arrangement...
