Frontline police officers are meeting today to decide whether they should demand the right to go on strike in an increasingly bitter row over pay. We are currently barred by an Act of Parliament from taking industrial action, but the Police Federation which represents rank and file officers says anger over this year's pay deal means there is support for a change. Many of my colleagues are of the opinion that the agreed pay negotiation process exists because we can't strike, and that if the Home Secretary wants to stick 2 fingers up to it, they have the right to explore whether they can strike. The dispute centres on a decision to give English and Welsh police a 1.9% pay rise rather than the 2.5% increase agreed by the Tribunal. |

TBH this doesn't surprise me. For a government that has been saying that it considers tackling crime a serious issue, it doesn't actually put its money where its mouth is much - the Courts and Prisons have already gone on strike this year, and it's looking increasingly likely in the Probation Service. |
