Sir Ian Blair has been accused by one of his former top officers of compromising the Metropolitan Police's political independence. In a Daily Telegraph interview, ex-deputy assistant commissioner Brian Paddick claims the Met commissioner is too close to the Labour government. He also said he felt forced to back plans to extend pre-charge detention of terror suspects to up to 90 days. Mr Paddick is the Liberal Democrat candidate for mayor of London.

I say this as Jason, nothing to do with "SnoBoardr" and definitely nothing to do with OUTeverywhere "officialdom"...

But....

Yeah, he's gay. Yeah, he was the most senior openly gay officer in the Met. Yeah, he's been outspoken against Sir Ian Blair. So what to all of that.

Despite his apparently marvellous career, I had the unfortunate circumstance of meeting him at a high profile LGBT event in London a while back. He was in my humble opinion quite dismissive, very characterless, and totally devoid of charisma.. the most shockingly dull "high profile gay man" I've ever met from "the public eye". He may be great at his job but the London Mayor also needs charisma and public charm. It may not be a part of the job description, but he needs it for sure. And he ain't really got it. Ken has the charm and charisma but is defective in other crucial areas - please London find someone who fits the bill more fully. Please don't let people vote Brian Paddick as London Mayor.
