"THE Liberal Democrats were embroiled in a cash for access row yesterday after asking business leaders to pay £500 to meet Nick Clegg and other Coalition ministers. Party chiefs are offering the lunch date with the Deputy Prime Minister as part of their Scottish spring conference in Inverness.

The event is billed as an opportunity for company bosses to meet party leaders and discuss issues facing businesses across the Highlands."

"But the move has sparked claims the party is offering individuals the opportunity to influence senior UK Government members – at a price. The March package includes lunch with Mr Clegg and breakfast with Energy Secretary Chris Huhne.

Over senior figures expected to attend include Scottish Secretary Michael Moore, Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander, Business Secretary Vince Cable, and Scottish Lib Dem leader Willie Rennie."

"Officials yesterday dismissed claims that the event amounted to cash for access and pointed out other political parties held similar events. But campaigners at the Spinwatch transparency campaign said charging for such meetings raised serious questions.

Group member Dr William Dinan, a sociology lecturer at Strathclyde University, said: 'At a very basic level, it is about paying for access to ministers and people who are influential."

I wonder if people will get their money back (or even worse - still be forced to have lunch) if Huhne isn't still in the government by March?
