"Birmingham's top Liberal Democrat has ruled out joining forces with Labour to run the city council – claiming a deal would be like Winston Churchill making friends with Adolf Hitler after the Second World War.

Paul Tilsley said the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition that has controlled the council since 2004 would continue to hold office even though both parties suffered disastrous results on Thursday."

"(Labour) is unlikely to have any power because the Government is ready to appoint Conservative council leader Mike Whitby as Shadow Mayor of Birmingham at the end of this year – a position he will hold until a mayoral election is held in May 2013.

Sir Albert said the appointment of Coun Whitby as Shadow Mayor without an election was undemocratic and he warned of 18 months of strife as the Tory would struggle to get his policies and budget passed by a Labour-controlled city council.

He added: 'The Labour group will not engage in the kind of relationship there would have to be between a mayor and the council."

Why on earth will there be a shadow Mayor and why would they appoint someone who doesn't have the support of the council?
