I ask only half in jest. If you read today's Times, no doubt you'll have read this:

In the past I have said about CCTV surveillance that only criminals need worry but there comes a time where all this surveillance becomes too authoritarian. This article suggests something that breaches my limits of tolerance.

When Blair left office I thought that maybe Labour's control freakishness had left too. But no, they're still at it, dreaming up new ways to keep tabs on everyone and everything.

As is pointed out in the article, such an enormous database of everyone's doings is in itself a security risk. I could see Al Qaeda or whoever using this thing to great advantage.

When will this government learn that letting most private people carry on their lives unmolested by the state is the best way to ensure peace and security? Yes, there is a place for internal security activities but mainly it's only a very small place.

To carry through with such legislation would be an act of fascism, extreme authoritarianism that displays a complete lack of trust in ordinary people.
