"A Liberal Democrat minister at the Department for Communities and Local Government has called reports of urban deprivation 'sob stories' — but the comment has mysteriously gone missing from Hansard.

Speaking in a Westminster Hall debate on Tuesday, Andrew Stunnell — whose responsibilities include 'Big Society, housing and regeneration' — was confronted by demands from MPs to explain the coalition's swingeing cuts to regeneration funding, which will leave thousands of derelict houses still standing and areas of city centres left completely empty as a consequence.

He responded with a patronising remark:

'We all bring different sob stories and different perspectives to the debate.'"

"Asked by Jack Dromey to withdraw the comment, stone-cold Stunnell simply ignored the request — but in the official record of the debate, the word 'sob' is strangely absent. The incident was brought to the attention of the Speaker by Labour MP Alison Seabeck later in the day:

'We have a Hansard copy of the debate in which the word ‘sob' has been removed. Clearly, that is very politically sensitive, because we felt that it was somewhat insulting.'"
