"An independent report published today found there is a degree of  'uncertainty' around the benefits of the high speed rail project the government is proposing (HS2).

The report, written by Oxera and commissioned by the Transport Select Committee of the UK House of Commons, also found there is ‘relatively little evidence presented' surrounding the socio-economic and regional impacts of the project.

The report was provided to inform the questioning by the Committee Members of those who have prepared the case during its High Speed Rail—Investing in Britain's Future inquiry."

"Drivers overwhelmingly (84%) said the government should prioritise investment in the maintenance and improvement of local services rather than expensive schemes such as the high speed rail link between London and Birmingham."

"Almost half (48%) of drivers questioned said they were cutting back on journeys for financial reasons but 86% of rural drivers claimed it would be very difficult for them to use their cars less, compared to 69% of urban drivers. Rural people are almost twice as reliant on their cars when it comes to visiting loved ones than city dwellers (80% v 44%), the RAC said."

"Earlier this month, research by Ipsos Mori for National Rail and the Association of Train Operating Companies showed that one in six travellers had switched from car to train travel for at least one journey this year, with about half saying it is because of soaring petrol prices. "
