There are reports that he has been rushed to hospital suffering from kidney failure. Given that he's already fighting cancer, I wonder if the next news will be that he's dead.

If he does die, what next for Venezuela? Will a sympathy vote see his political party retain the presidency? Or will the opposition find someone around whom they can unite? If the left retains the presidency, will the next president be more conciliatory? Left-wingers aren't all divisive and confrontational, even in the eyes of right-wingers. President Lula of Brazil won a lot of respect from all sides, yet when elected he was seen as a radical leftie.

Chavez may recover but the prospect of his death presents opportunities for his enemies and allies alike. I will be very interested to see what does happen if he dies.

I think where there's a cult of a person it's very unusual for the regime to be able to carry on. Often they'll stagger on a bit, but nothing like the original (I'm thinking of Evita in particular here).
