Conservative MP Philip Davies is to be commended for tabling Early Day Motion 1318 in the House of Commons, 'That this House deplores the Arts Council's decision to ask intrusive and irrelevant questions about the sexual orientation of those applying for grants; believes that this should be a private matter and not something that individuals should be asked to reveal; considers that sexual orientation should be completely irrelevant in modern day Britain; notes that the idea of putting people into stereotypical tick boxes is an example of political correctness which is opposed by 80% of the people in Britain in an ICM poll; urges the Arts Council to take serious note of the many objections raised by eminent actors and actresses who find this both offensive and insulting; and calls on the Arts Council to end the request for this highly personal information immediately'.

As a gay man and borough council candidate for the UK Independence Party I abhor the Arts Council's decision to collect data about the sexual orientation of applicants for grants as much as I do Her Majesty's Government's intention to introduce ID cards with biometric strips which, no doubt, will also contain confidential information such as one's sexuality, creed, etc, which will expose one to greater risk from blackmailers and ID thieves. Not only is it offensive and insulting to ask, nay expect, people to disclose their sexual orientation, it will ultimately subject lesbians and gay men to the same level of abuse by a future Islamic-dominated government in what has traditionally been a free country (i.e., the UK) to that which the Jews suffered at the hands of Nazi Germany in the 1930s and 1940s.

So much for the right to protection from invasion of privacy, without which one's other freedoms – including freedom of association for a lawful purpose, freedom of speech and publication, freedom of movement, freedom of thought and action – become meaningless, as one suspects the impending ID card will also contain information on our home and e-mail addresses which will afford Government Departments, identity thieves and others the golden opportunity to intercept electronic mail and clone the identity of the cardholder as surely as the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill now before Parliament seeks to clone human embryos to create the perfect being and, by fair means or foul, obliterate all whom they consider to be imperfect.

Comments anyone - favourable or otherwise?
