If 'life begins at forty' I'm either running late or have missed the boat
As I somehow made it to the grand 4-0 last October
Yet have still to get a life.

The last few years have been very hard
As my Generalised Anxiety Disorder has kicked in
Destroying the relationship I once enjoyed with Mr Right
And robbing me of all my self-confidence with everyone in every situation.

I feel stuck in a rut
In a dead-end job where I'm neither content nor happy
And forever worrying about the volume of work I face each day.

I increasingly feel detached from the world
As I pass folk in the street
Wishing I could once again share
In the good health and happiness which sustains them.

Somehow, somewhere, I have got to rediscover myself
At the moment I am lost
Under an ever-increasing pile of rubble

Each day seems to be a continuation of the last
With precious little time to think where I'm going next
Before the onward march of work
Pushes me in a direction I do not want to go.

I need time and space to breathe
But daily and hourly feel suffocated by the demands of work
Starving me of the 'me time' I need to recharge my batteries.

Inside of work I'm continually rushing round like a headless chicken
That when it comes time to go home I'm unable to switch-off
So when I am at home I am unable to relax
And consequently return to work more anxious and tired than when I left.

Living alone doesn't help either
As I find myself perpetually worrying about things left undone
On top of new tasks I am expected to do on my next shift at work.

I get days where I feel so tense
No-one or nothing can melt the mental iceberg inside me
Which bars me from all will to live
And I just want to curl up in a ball and die.

If 'life begins at forty', hurry up life you're already four months late
Time and tide wait for no man
You have just under eight months to go before I'm forty-one!
