Best way to dispatch an injured bird

This is a bit gruesome, but I need some ideas to help me.

I was walking in the fields by my house with my mum, who was visiting, earlier. We came across a large crow, which unfortunately was injured but not dead. It could barely move, and had obviously been quite badly pecked at by other birds.

I wanted to kill it, to put it out of its misery, but couldn't. I know what you're thinking: he's a dentist. What could he possibly be squeamish about? This is different.

A quick check with binoculars has shown that it's still there, still alive, and still being attacked. I can't let it carry on like this, so what should I do? I could bash it on the head with a rock, or squash its neck with my shoe, I suppose. I don't want to handle the bird, and I don't want to run the risk of injuring it further without quickly and painlessly killing it.

I'll wait five minutes to see what ideas you've got, then I'm gonna go and do the deed.

I hope this hasn't upset anyone, but OUT has always been good to me in the past when I've needed advice.
