photoI'm a quiet person, and I prefer to be having an intimate talk with friends rather than be somewhere public and noisy. I enjoy making and listening to early and baroque music, and hill walking with my dog. I love my walking boots much more than any pair of designer jeans. I'm trying to change my life so that I own nothing that is neither truly needed nor beautiful.

So, another Vista annoyance has got my goat today. EVERY single time I
am forced to use this pile of droppings, I get some other 'annoyance' that
makes me spit.

Today I have just inserted a USB key and copied a file to it. I diligently close
the explorer window that was open showing me the contents, and then
choose 'safely remove device'. Vista says 'You can't remove this device it
is in use'.

Now, no application is running, no window is open, nothing, nada. The
copy completed without a problem, no 'Vista wants to sneeze, will you give
it permission' dialogue. Nothing. I chose the 'safely remove' from both
the 'Computer' window, and from the quickluanch area (bottom right of
the menu bar). Neither works.

What am I to do? In the past I have been forced to reboot to get Vista to
'release' back to me my USB memory stick, but it takes almost 10 minutes
to do a full re-cycle...

Advice (apart from the obvious of not touching the steaming pile of
rubbish that is Vista (tm - as if anyone would want to steal *that* brand!) :)

And another thing... rather than saying 'You can't remove this device it is in
use', why doesn't it tell you what is using it? I mean, it *must* know or it wouldn't
be able to print this silly and unhelpful message.

I've never tried it! and they are now stopping XP!

Just did the same in Apple Mac OS X - dragged the drive icon into the trash (which
dutifully turns into an 'eject' icon) and it flushes the caches and ejects for
safe removal. Not only that but it updates any open file explorer window that had
any part of the file directory from the device showing by moving to the nearest
node in the file tree above the mounted device - cool huh?

And people say Vista is a decent operating system? Come over here and say
that! ;)

Yes, and people are quite happy sticking with it, but then Microsoft wouldn't
make any money if they actually provided a choice because people don't see
the need to move to a bloated and cranky heap of droppings like Vista.

I had a row with Vista last night - I wanted to get into the folder options to find a hidden file - nice and easy in XP - I had to go into the control panel to fish it out!!!!

You know, every time I hear of people having problems with Vista, I'm less and less inclined to switch to it....

I have a feeling it'd wind me up no end and I'd end up throwing the computer across the room.

I will just have to save up some more for that nice shiny Mac Pro..... :D

Its good and I haven't had 1 problem with it yet. I reguarly take USB sticks in and out of it quite easily.
