#90232Mon 14/04/08 18:01		Today I was driving behind a tanker with a large label saying, "Non-hazardous Product". As I drove on I thought I recognized the type of tanker and my suspicions were confirmed when it turned right and I saw on the side, "Septic Tank Emptying Service". Non-hazardous! That's not a description I'd use for raw sewage. I can think of plenty of hazards, not just bio-hazards too. For a start: 1. It's full of bacteria and other microbes, many of which are pathogens. 2. Fermenting sewage gives off methane, so there's a risk of fire and/or explosion. 3. If it's household waste, it'll contain detergents and other products used in the home. These can seriously pollute the environment. 4. Sewage is rich in nitrates, hence its use as fertilizer, but dumped in one place, as would happen in an accident, it would have a serious impact on local ecology. Yes, sewage is the natural product of human activity but in today's world it contains a lot more than faeces, urine and vomit. If I came across an accident involving a spillage from one of these tankers, I'd consider it a serious hazard to the environment. I think it is wrong and misleading to label this as a "Non-hazardous Product".

biggles1Mon 14/04/08 19:14		Strictly speaking raw sewage isnt hazardous well not until 2009 when the law is due to change Actually Sewage can also be explosive as well (the methane gas it produces can ignite ) :-)
