Accepting that I am a touchy feely liberal compared to a lot of people on Out (and glad of it), I am still amazed by:

- the number of people who just want to encourage the police to be more brutal;

- how little interest anyone has in what are the underlying causes of ..hundreds? Thousands? of people being so disconnected from society that they will run amok looting, setting fire to buildings and terrorising large areas of our cities.

If nothing else, it might just be worth understanding what is going on in order to not have it keep happening!

I think a great majority of them are just out to cause havoc, mayhem and steal whatever they can. I don't think the causes are any more than a bunch of feral bored youths who don't really give a shit (or have a thought) about the consequences.

Did you hear the two girls being interviewed by the Beeb this morning? That kind of sums it up for me.

Thing is, it seems no one can or wants to look beyond the looting andso just blame it all on that, its certainly an easy way for the Goverment to blame something else. Like the riots in the 80's, outrage can be easily directed in the right way and then it stops the real analysis from happening.
If you do say as much, you are just dismissed as a wooly liberal, not someone with a modicum of intelligence to maybe question the total reason ( and of course there is alot of opportunism in the looting) and see beyond the hysteria, which is just like the hysteria in the 80's but with internet.

There will no doubt be a lot of talk in the following days and weeks about the factors that contributed to these events. However, one of the conclusions has to be that a small element of our population make a deliberate choice to disconnect from society because criminal activity is easier than earning a living in a honest way.

It's how we deal with these people that is one of the key decisions to make.
