I have just watched 'First Cuts: Being Maxine Carr' on 4OD. This was originally screened on 14/12/07. It was based on people who have been mistaken for Maxine Carr and the suffering they have gone through.

I am frankly ashamed and feel disgusted to be part of British society. Whilst I do not condone any single thing that Maxine Carr has done in relation to the Soham murders, I do not see how people can just assume that people who neither look, sound or even appear to be like Maxine Carr are actually her.

Innocent women have been persecuted, bullied and downright villified as a result of pure assumption and gossip, and frankly I think those people should be shot. These innocent women have been subjected to extreme measures delivered by the general public and have done nothing to warrant what they have had forced upon them. They have lived in constant fear, one even to the point of suicide.

I think it's about time those members of what we call a civil society actually thought about their actions and at least get some sort of proof to their accusations before acting on any form of speculation. Whilst I understand people feel that they must exercise their right to speak and give their opinions, it is not their right to unjustifiably bully and push people to the brink of breakdowns just because they 'think' that this person is Maxine Carr.

I fear my faith in public trust is diminishing - does anyone agree?

I doubt whether most of these people really understand what Maxine Carr did. She wasn't involved in the killing (as I think these people may be assuming) and doesn't seem to have been aware the girls had been killed until afterwards. It's like paediatricians being attacked because the thick sods don't know the difference between them and paedophiles.
