I was working on an image of Castle Eden Dene near Peterlee:

It got me thinking of woods and forests and the fact that quite a few people feel quite scared of going through these places. I remember being in the Lake District in July 2006 and walked through a forest not far off Keswick, along Derwent Water.

We set off for my walk with my friend and we were out a few hours, the forest was ok during the daylight; we were followed by a caravan of midgies and mosquitoes as it was very warm and humid, plus being near to Derwent Water.

We had gone quite far into the forest and into a clearing! My friend is a fan of owls and bats and wanted to see if he could spot either. On our return, darkness was drawing in and I suddenly felt intimidated by the surroundings; I disliked looking around into the dark areas between the trees.

It was also deadly silent and another fear I had was that any sounds would be heard easily. I had that feeling that you were stared at.
It was also getting pitch dark.

Fortunately I was with my friend and we had torches to help us see and we made it back safely. I think that the media are to blame for some of the fear, woods generally used in horror films, scenes where murders take place, etc.

No I am just scared of finding a decapitated head.

I live near a big forest with special protection area status too!
