Just your average geordie bloke in London, who works way too hard but tries to find time for good mates, beery nights out, indie and electro clubs/bands, good food, and cuddles under the duvet on a sunday morning. Applications welcome :-)

zerocrop2000Thu 13/03/08 10:56		Nine Inch Nails have just released their new album 'Ghosts' as an internet-only download from their own website. They allowed fans to download the first NINE tracks for free, as DRM-free MP3s, then charged a mere $5 (£2.50) for the other 27 tacks (yes, its a big album). They've made $1.8million in the first week. I don't know how that compares to how much they would have made from a normal CD, that they only get 7% royalties on, but it sounds pretty good to me. Now thats quite an oddly large album, but I could easily see somebody like, say, Madonna, releasing 1-2 free tracks from a 10-12 track album, instead of singles, which always make a loss anyway. Then selling the rest for a few quid. Which could easily be done if you cut out the packaging, distribution, record company and retailers cut. I think we, and the beleaguered music industry, always knew this was going to happen, but it's good to see it finally working.

jacksparrowThu 13/03/08 11:02		Isn't there an element of technological determinism going on here? I mean the new trend for releasing albums/tracks via the internet does demand that people have the technology to download the files in the first place. I just wonder whether artists should be making their music only available to consumers who can buy the music via computer.
gayrathThu 13/03/08 11:03		I think CDs as a was of distributing music will die sooner rather then later. With more and more people keeping their collections on PCs and owning MP3 players, and the obvious benefits of distributing music over the internet being much cheaper it does make perfect sense.
zerocrop2000Thu 13/03/08 11:10		I think the main point is that it puts the Artist fully in control of their music, how its sold, and how its distributed. With all the royalties going back to them, cutting out the useless music industry, who will now have to depend more and more on saturday night tv karaoke contests to make any money.
