I was on my Yahoo E-mail when I got an ad flashing at me about winning a US Green Card.

Now, I'm not planning to go and live there but I was curious what it was about so went and had a look.

Basically you put in some basic details and it would work out if you were elligable to enter the Green Card Lottery.

It seems that no one from the UK who's parents or partner is British are allowed to apply and I was wondering if anyone knew why?

Any country with a certain number of standard applicants over a certain threshold are automatically barred from it. The UK has never been entitled to enter it ever. I think one of the main premises is to help more developing nations.

Generally behind the ads are companies who will, even if you are a British Citizen, attempt to get money out of you to see if they can progress your application and if it isn't possible attempt to sell you attorney services to get another type of VISA, generally unsuccessfully.

basic details like...

-do you think the US is always justified in doing whatever it wants in all cases even if everyone else diasgrees?
-do you think anyone who listens to Cat Stevens records is a terrorist?

is it that sort of thing?

Although thanks to the strong Irish lobby in Congress anyone from Northern Ireland is still eligible to enter the Green Card lottery.

My knowledge might be rusty on that score but last time it checked, we were too developed and i believe if over something like 50,000 annual applicants prohibits entry. but again i might be wrong

Looking at the list I saw, from Europe only the UK that was excluded. Germany, France, even Ireland were all there.

As I say, I was just curious why we weren't on the list and now I know.

Thanks

:o)
