We are a sociable and friendly couple who live in a village just to the east of Sevenoaks, Kent. We're always happy to make new friends, see old friends, and enjoy people's company. Our interests include theatre, films, music, countryside, gigs, video-gaming, and our gorgeous dog, Baxter.

Yesterday, at the request of our OUT house guests we went to Dungeness, Kent, the place with the nuclear power station.

The main reason to go was to see Derek Jarman's house.

Well having done that and let Baxter have a swim in the sea, (his coat is now glowing with health) we went to the cafe by the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch railway station. Dogs were not allowed in, fair enough, but they had a picnic table area. The cafe was like a throw back from the 1950's/60's. Formica everywhere. There was a sign up in the gents proclaiming the toilets were cleaned and inspected regularly. Annually, possibly, and were shortly due for their next check.

It was grey, overcast and raining slightly. We swiftly drank our tea sitting next to the propane gas tanks, with the power station throbbing away behind us, observing the power lines snaking away over the flat landscape into the distance. There was a sign giving advice on what to do if the emergency sirens went off at the power station. An awful lot of words for" get the fuck out of there".

There was an eerie overwhelming sense of foreboding about the place. The land that time forgot.

Now I know that the various refugee centres in east Africa are hardly jolly places at the moment, but we have not been there, perhaps you have. Tell us about the grimmest place you have been to.
