I was recently contacted by someone on Out who, from the first couple of messages appeared normal. However, this person was aparrantly soon going on a business trip to Malaysia and wanted to keep in contact by messenger.

There was a doubt in my mind, but nothing could point to this person being real or not. Then the con begins, the business costing moe than available, temporarily needing 'funds'. Alarm bells become deafening, and after my explanation that I am short of money myself, conversation began to dwindle. Then this week, he needs to top up his mobile, can I help, just 100 pounds onto the Lebara (mmm, Lebara and Nigeria and unrecoverable instantly come to mind). Of course, I would love to help but have no money (honest!).

Of course this is a con, but the clincher which I didn't think of at the time was to check the origin of the first e-mail I was sent. Routing information showed that the e-mail isp originated in Malaysia (219.93.13.xxx - the last three digits vary). This routing information is contained in all e-mails, but often hidden for clarity. It is easy to find, however:

Aparrantly, Malaysia is a central hub for Nigerian scams.

I have messaged Out regarding my suspicion for this person and hope that no one falls for this type of con. However, they are much more difficult to first sus out, but hopefully once mention of an auntie dying, a leg falling off or similar should sound very loud alarm bells if they haven't already started ringing.

As they say, caveat emptor!
