I've been thinking about the powers that the police have to stop and search people these days.

Sparked by seeing metal detectors at tube stations (on the news), I've been wondering what people's experiences have been with these?

I remember reading about someone (ages ago now) that refused to be searched on getting off a train at (I think) Waterloo unless the police could show grounds for their suspicion that he was the person they were looking for. I think they were looking for someone witha knife or similar.

Has anyone had any run ins of this ilk?

How would you react?

Personally I think I'd initially go along with it (as my upbringing makes me automatically comply with policemen regardless) but actually be rather pissed off with it later.

It depends under what powers you are bieng stopped and searched. There are stop and serch powers under a fewe bits of legislation. Public Order, Terrorism Act etc.

Some require the police to be looking for something/somoene specifically, others just give the police the power to stop and search anyone.

I think I'd be the same, although just randomly stopping people to search them is wrong in my opinion. It sounds like something that would happen in East Germany when the Stasi were in charge.... :S. Not here!
