London Scottish guy based in Islington. In a great relationship for 17 years - CP ceremony last December - but looking for new friends and more variety in my life. Into great food, wine, good conversation (politics and social issues) and hunky men! Go to the gym a couple of times a week but not exactly what you'd call a gym bunny.

OK, so I'm growing a beard. Just turned 40, never worn a beard, thought I should give it a try. Not shaved for a week, it's growing quite nicely.

Internet advice seems to suggest 4 weeks growth then get the first tidy/design professionally done. 4 weeks seems an awfully long time given it's quite thick under my chin already. I do want someone to give some advice on how to trim it when it gets to styling time - I'm trying to give my lower face a bit more definition and not look so young (yes I know how that sounds but I'm a bit fed up of being described as boyish at 40).

Any recommendations for places to go for that first trim to get a really good, sharp look? A lot of the mens grooming places like Gentlemans Tonic will do it but would like a recommendation. And do I really need to wait four weeks? I'm guessing it will look awful by then...

PS - ignore my profile pic. It's crap and was taken about 6 years ago. My bleach-blond phase was my last identity crisis... I must get a new pic up so that you can help advise me..
